District Royalty Competition

GENERAL RULES

  • A teacher may enter only ONE STUDENT per category (total of 8 categories).
  • The competition is open to pianists, instrumentalists and singers.
  • Each contestant sent to the State Finals must first win his/her District Competition.
  • No tied contestants will be allowed to enter State Finals.
  • Winners MUST perform at Junior Awards Day to receive his/her award.
  • No one may compete for a title he/she has previously won.

REPERTOIRE

  1. Only one piece is required.
  2. The same piece performed at District Level must be used at State Finals.
  3. Each contestant MUST bring two published scores (3 if possible) of the music.
  4. NO PHOTOCOPIES will be allowed. Students with photocopies will be DISQUALIFIED AND NOT ALLOWED TO COMPETE. *NOTE:  Music paid for and downloaded from the internet is permitted. Please keep documentation like receipts or permission information.
  5. No concertos; only solo works can be offered.
  6. Any audition which exceeds the stated time limit in any category will be stopped if that time limit is reached.

FEES

District Entry Fee — $6.00, each contestant, payable to NCFMC.

Local Fees — $2.00, or more, as needed for local expenses, payable to the District Royalty Chairman. Mail both checks to the District Royalty Chairman.

State Entry Fee — $8.00, for each District Winner, payable to NCFMC, to be paid AFTER the District Auditions.

AWARDS

Winners MUST perform at Junior Awards Day to receive his/her award. No checks or awards will be presented unless this requirement is met.

If the 1st Place Winner cannot perform, the award will be given to the 2nd Place Winner upon his performance. This 2nd Place Winner may not compete again in the category in which he accepted the award.

For students who win the Royalty and the Scholarship Auditions in the same year, the following rules apply:

  1. The student must perform at BOTH Winners’ Recitals on Junior Awards Day.
  2. The student must play/sing the winning Royalty audition piece at the Royalty Recital.
  3. The piece to be played/sung at the Scholarship Winners Recital MUST be one of the State Scholarship pieces, but DIFFERENT from the one played or sung for the Royalty Recital.

Scholarships, awards or cups will be awarded at the end of the day on Junior Awards Day to the entrant making the highest rating in his/her event.

PAGE BOY AND PAGE GIRL

2. Repertoire……………………………..Primary III through Elementary III or HIGHER
3. Time Limit……………………………..3 minutes or less (repeats may be omitted)
4. Award…………………………………….First Place $75.00, Second Place $35.00

LORD AND LADY

1. Level……………………………………….Grades 4, 5 and 6 as of March 1st
2. Repertoire……………………………….Elementary IV through MD III or HIGHER
3. Time Limit……………………………….6 minutes or less (repeats may be omitted)
4. Award……………………………………..First $100.00, Second Place $50.00

PRINCE AND PRINCESS

1. Level…………………………………………Grades 7,8 and 9 as of March 1st
2. Repertoire………………………………..Difficult I through Very Difficult I or HIGHER
3. Time Limit……………………………..…10 minutes or less (repeats may be omitted)
4. Award……………………………………….First Place $150, Second Place $75.00

KING AND QUEEN

1. Level………………………………………….Grades 10, 11 and 12 as of March 1st
2. Repertoire…………………………………VD II through MA II or HIGHER
3. Time Limit…………………………………10 minutes or less (repeats may be omitted)
4. Award………………………………………..First Place $225.00, Second Place $100.00

All works must be performed by memory
If a multi-movement work ONE movement only
Repertoire is not limited to the Junior Festival Bulletin selections. Non-American works that fit within the time limits are acceptable
A Theme and Variations is not a “multi-movement work”. If a student offers a Theme and Variations work it must be performed in its entirety. If the work does not fall within the time limit, another composition should be chosen.
